New polymeric materials from reactive blending of commercial polymers

The studies are focalized on the synthesis and characterization of new polymeric materials obtained by reactive blending of commercial polymers, under controlled conditions. The knowledge and control of the chemical reactions occurring during reactive blending of polymers having reactive functional groups in the main chain or as terminals, allows to synthesize new copolymers with reproducible composition and properties, which determine their possibilities of employment. The studies also allow the recovery of commercial polymers that may be destined for landfill. The studies also provide the specific functionalization of the polymers. image: reactive blending of commercial polymers Both chemical composition and chemical structure of the polymeric materials thus obtained are investigated by means of (1H and 13C)-NMR Mass Spectrometry (particularly by MALDI-TOF MS) and FTIR techniques. The thermal properties and thermal stability are studied by DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) and TGA (thermogravimetry); the molecular weights are determined by SEC (size exclusion chromatography). Mechanical properties are investigated by DMA and rheometric measurements.
